Juneteenth: A Celebration of Freedom, Inclusion, and Community at Puffin Store NJ

At Puffin Store NJ, we believe cannabis culture is about more than just products—it’s about people, community, and shared freedom. This Juneteenth, we take a moment to honor the significance of this day in American history, reflect on our role in the New Brunswick community, and reaffirm our ongoing commitment to inclusivity and equity.

What is Juneteenth?

Juneteenth—celebrated each year on June 19—is the oldest nationally recognized commemoration of the end of slavery in the United States. While the Emancipation Proclamation took effect in 1863, many enslaved people in Texas weren’t informed of their freedom until Union troops arrived in Galveston on June 19, 1865—over two years later. That moment became a powerful symbol of delayed justice and long-overdue liberation. Juneteenth reminds us of both the painful legacy of slavery and the enduring strength, resilience, and culture of Black Americans.

Puffin’s Place in the Community

We’re proud to be based in the heart of New Brunswick, a vibrant city rooted in diversity and shaped by its rich Black and POC heritage. As a local cannabis dispensary, Puffin seeks to be more than a retail space—we aim to be a welcoming environment for all, a cultural hub, and a safe space for expression, wellness, and conversation.

We recognize that the cannabis industry, despite its rapid growth, still carries historical and systemic inequities. Black communities have disproportionately borne the weight of cannabis criminalization, yet continue to be underrepresented in the legal market. Puffin is actively committed to disrupting that pattern. We make it a priority to:

  • Support Black-owned and POC-owned brands and feature them proudly on our shelves.
  • Hire locally, giving opportunities to community members from all walks of life.
  • Host inclusive events that reflect the diversity of our city—from Drag Bingo to local artist showcases.
  • Partner with local organizations focused on justice, equity, and empowerment.

Creating an Inclusive Cannabis Space

Inclusion at Puffin Store NJ isn’t a trend—it’s a core value. Our staff reflects the community we serve, and we foster a culture where every guest feels seen, respected, and celebrated. Whether it’s your first dispensary visit or your 50th, you’re part of our Puffin Store NJ family.

This Juneteenth, we invite our community to reflect with us. Stop by, learn more, and celebrate freedom—not just the freedom to choose cannabis, but the deeper freedom that comes from equity, opportunity, and understanding.

Let’s honor the past while building a more inclusive future—together.
